Tom Timberman’s Bio
Tom Timberman is an attorney and adjunct professor at the George Washington University’s graduate study Elliot Center. He has also served as a senior decision-maker at the US Department of State, as well as a business and economic development professional.
As an accomplished and multi-faceted professional, Tom is knowledgeable of and comfortable working in very challenging foreign and American business environments. Returning from special assignments in Afghanistan in 2012, he began to translate and reapply his years working to restore economies and viable communities in six war-zones, into tools to help poorer US rural areas.
Tom has become known as an expert in establishing and marketing US industrial development authorities…. state-supported local government subsidiaries aimed at strengthening county and municipality economies. Most recently, he took advantage of the 2017 Tax and Jobs legislation, to start an Opportunity Fund in one of Maryland’s designated Opportunity Zones. As part of this initiative he is spearheading a program to convince traditional farmers to begin growing industrial hemp as a substitute crop for lost agriculture export markets.
In addition to Tom’s public and business experience, he has expertise training senior and mid-level managers on strategic and operational planning and analyses. He is also active in the community sitting on the Boards of state and regional non-profits, and local community and technical colleges.
